Guidelines on Sexually Transmitted and Blood-Borne Infections (STBBIs) in Canada

The Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) provides public health guidance for the prevention and management of STBBIs. These guides are for healthcare providers and public health professionals and outline national recommendations for:

  • the screening and diagnosis of STBBIs; and
  • the treatment of sexually transmitted infections of national public health importance.

These guides replace the Canadian Guidelines on Sexually Transmitted Infections. All treatment recommendations include indications for the level and quality of evidence. PHAC’s guides on STBBIs DO NOT supersede:

  • provincial/territorial legislative, regulatory, policy, and practice requirements; and
  • any professional guidelines that govern the practice of health professionals in their respective jurisdictions, whose recommendations may differ due to local epidemiology or context.

Saskatchewan Guidelines for the Management of Exposures to Blood and Body Fluids

The Guidelines for the Management of Exposures to Blood and Body Fluids (2013) serve as Saskatchewan’s reference for healthcare professionals caring for individuals who have been exposed to blood or body fluids. This document provides practical tools to support clinicians in evaluating and managing exposures using a consistent approach, helping ensure coordinated and continuous care across the health care team. CDN STBBI Guidelines – Mobile App

Health Canada has a mobile application with the most up-to-date recommendations for the management of sexually transmitted and blood-borne infections called “CDN STBBI Guidelines”.

The HIV Handbook – Online Guide for Service Providers (CATIE)

In 2023, CATIE developed an online guide that provides core information about HIV, as well as links to resources for service providers to strengthen their learning. The HIV Handbook explores key topics including transmission, epidemiology, health equity, testing, prevention, and treatment. It’s a comprehensive source for fundamental knowledge and a great place to start for anyone looking to learn more about HIV.
