Preventing HIV – Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP)
“Pre-exposure prophylaxis, or PrEP, is a highly effective HIV prevention strategy that HIV-negative people can use to lower their chance of getting HIV. Use of PrEP involves taking antiretroviral (anti-HIV) drugs and having regular medical appointments for monitoring and support. When PrEP is taken as prescribed, the risk of HIV transmission is extremely low. PrEP is generally safe and well tolerated and is available by prescription in Canada. PrEP is currently only available in pill form (also known as oral PrEP) but other types of PrEP are in development.”

Disclosing your HIV Status
HIV disclosure occurs when someone tells someone else that they are HIV-positive. Disclosure can take on many different forms and can happen in several contexts. It often involves a complex mix of mental, emotional, social, and legal issues. Disclosure may feel overwhelming, risky, or even threatening. Disclosure to sexual partners or people that you share drug equipment with may be required by law, under Canada’s Criminal Code.

Undetectable = Untransmittable (U=U)
Undetectable Equals Untransmittable (U=U) is an awareness campaign describing the sexual transmission of HIV. It has been scientifically proven when HIV is undetectable, it is sexually untransmittable. This means that: if you are HIV-positive, take treatment consistently and maintain an undetectable viral load, you can have sex and know that you will not pass HIV to your sexual partner.

Serodiscordant Relationships
A serodiscordant or discordant relationship, also known as a mixed status relationship, is an intimate relationship where one person is living with HIV and the other is not. Being diagnosed with HIV does not mean that a person cannot be in a relationship or have sex. It is also possible for a discordant couple to safely conceive and deliver a baby that does not have HIV.
There are several ways to prevent HIV transmission within a discordant couple, including:
