The Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) has set a global goal to end the AIDS epidemic as a public health threat by 2030. To monitor progress towards this goal, UNAIDS established “90-90-90” treatment targets for 2020 which are:

  • 90% of people living with HIV are diagnosed;
  • 90% of all those who are diagnosed with HIV are on treatment; and
  • 90% of all those on treatment have a supressed viral load.

In October 2016, the Sharing the Wisdom: HIV Mobilization Event brought together a diverse group of stakeholders to guide the development of a multi-year work plan for continued action in addressing HIV in Saskatchewan.

With the 90-90-90 treatment goals in mind as well as the input and information collected at the Sharing the Wisdom Event, the SK HIV Collaborative created a three-year provincial work plan to improve access to testing and clinical interventions as well as continue efforts to engage, educate, and support individuals and communities to prevent the transmission of HIV.

The following goals were identified by the SK HIV Collaborative and its stakeholders and are at the centre of the resulting 2017-2020 SK HIV Collaborative Work Plan.

  • Optimize the HIV Care Environment.
  • Increase HIV Testing Coverage and Linkage to Care (Target: 90% of people living with HIV are diagnosed).
  • Increase HIV Treatment Coverage (Target: 90% of all those diagnosed with HIV are on treatment).
  • Increase Retention in Care, Treatment Adherence, and Viral Suppression (Target: 90% of all those on treatment have a supressed viral load).
  • Improve HIV Surveillance and Program Monitoring and Evaluation.
